You are kindly invited to the online symposium “Transformative institutions: charting paths to alternative futures” on Friday, 15 March 2024, at 7:00 pm!
___________
Departing from their own curatorial and artistic practices, invited curators and artists will discuss some concrete, other speculative strategies that hold the potential for prompting an infrastructural reconfiguration of art institutions and cultural work while allowing spaces for imagining alternative futures.
The invited speakers include Biljana Ćirić, independent curator and founder of the educational platform What Could/Should Curating Do? (www.wcscd.com), Adelina Luft, independent curator and part of tranzit.ro/Bucuresti’s team (https://ro.tranzit.org/) and Lorenzo Sandoval, artist and initiator of TIER’s (http://theinstituteforendoticresearch.org/wp/about/).

Adelina Luft presents “The Experimental Station for Research on Art and Life,”a joint venture of a group of artists, curators, theorists, economists and others, who, together with tranzit.ro, co-own and co-manage a plot of land in the village Silistea Snagovului, 30 km north of Bucharest, in the proximity of a protected natural area. Situated in a long-duration perspective and throughout a participatory, open process of building and contextualizing, the Station aims to become a prototype for a cultural institution (a space for contemporary art, a residency and study centre) grounded in a locality shared with its community, situated in a post-development narrative and based on ecological and ethical principles.
Adelina Luft is an independent curator and part of tranzit.ro/Bucuresti’s team.

Lorenzo Sandoval will introduce us to The Institute for Endotic Research (TIER), which he founded as a fictional institution in 2015. Conceived as a habitable sculpture, the institute is dedicated to research about forms of generation and presentation of subject matter related to the endotic – an antonym for exotic. Bringing different practices together – architecture, art, mediation and curation, TIER takes the form of an institute to produce a host for a multidisciplinary approach for knowledge production. TIER opened a venue in 2018, as TIER.space by Co-Directors Lorenzo Sandoval and Benjamin Busch, who was part of the project until 2022. Aouefa Amoussouvi joined in 2021 and 2022. Currently TIER is co-directed by Lorenzo Sandoval, Shoufay Derz and August Gerardi.
Lorenzo Sandoval is an artist, filmmaker and curator.

Biljana Ćirić will share the self-reflective process of developing a model of institution between urban and rural ecologies connected to the plot of land in central Serbia within WHAT COULD/SHOULD CURATING DO?—WCSCD.
Established in 2018 in Belgrade, WCSCD is an educational platform focused on the notions of the curatorial and registered civic association. Since 2022, WCSCD entered a new stage of positioning itself. In this phase, WCSCD will consider itself in relation to merging the rural and the urban, through an open inquiry into what it means when an art institution becomes a custodian of the land.
Biljana Ćirić is an independent curator and founder of the educational platform What Could/Should Curating Do?
